If you’re a Japanophile living in the UK, you will probably have heard of HYPER JAPAN by now. This is the biggest Japan event in the UK and one of my favourites and, whether or not you’ve been before, I urge you to go! Whether it’s martial arts, cosplay, food or performing arts, you’ll find it all at HYPER JAPAN at the O2 Arena in London 10-12 July. Let’s take a look at what’s on this summer…
Whether it’s J-pop, visual rock or R&B, HYPER JAPAN has something for you this summer. Otaku idols Dempagumi.inc, queen of anime songs Eir Aoi, J-pop superstars Tokyo Girls’ Style, and visual rock band LOST ASH will star in the HYPER Live concert venue, with Wa-pop singer TOMOCA and kimono-clad girl group Heisei Kotohime also set to wow the crowds. Versatile J-pop project Less than Love will set your hearts racing with their fantastical upbeat tunes; VANIRU‘s cool and edgy goth vibe will lead you to the dark side; and Die Milch will entrance you with their lolita fashion and electro-classical beats! Thankfully, ILU GRACE will be there to take you back down to earth with their smooth R&B melodies.
Still standing up after a full day of HYPER JAPAN? On the evenings of Friday 10th and Saturday 11th July after the main event, acclaimed rock bands VAMPS, [Alexandros], OKAMOTO’S and Ling tosite sigure will be playing at the conveniently located concert venue, indigo at The O2. This looks like the biggest new addition to the HYPER JAPAN line-up and it looks ridiculously awesome.
Better than ever on-stage entertainment
Music not your thing? Not to worry! Japanese comedy duo Mukoangie will be raising the roof with their stand-up routines, dramas and comedy talk shows; while the Japan Anima(tor)’s Exhibition will be screening a super selection of innovative short films to expand your anime repertoire! Fantastic on-stage entertainment will be provided by the dynamic dance troupe Takarabune, as well as by swordplay masters Katanaya-ichi.
Anime Expert theatre
What’s it really like to work in the anime industry? HYPER JAPAN will feature stage talks with Tamae Hironaka and her team, a collection of industry pros with experience ranging from working with the biggest names like Studio Ghibli and on series such as Inuyasha, Detective Conan and D.Gray-Man to name just a few. There different stage events talking about Japanese anime, as well as autograph sessions and more.
Eat Japan will be back at HYPER JAPAN with the Sake Experience! This is a unique opportunity for sake lovers to try delicious samples straight from the brewers themselves, and for those not so familiar with sake to learn and experience first-hand why this traditional drink is so popular. Note – you’ll need to buy separate tickets for this one.
If you have a character you love to cosplay as, sign up for the COSParade! For the first time, people can enter costumes that have been bought and home-made. Your costume can be from any category, whether it’s video games or anime or film.
Next on the blog… we’re following in the footsteps of the historically awesome samurai Date Masamune and travelling to Sendai!
