Get in the damn Shinkansen!

One of Japan’s most iconic anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, celebrated in 20th anniversary in 2015. Naturally, Japan had something pretty ace planned – a Neon Genesis Evangelion Shinkansen (bullet train)! Why? The Sanyou Shinkansen was also celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2015. Not that we need much of an excuse.

Until March 2017, the 500 TYPE EVA Shinkansen is running between Shin-Osaka and Hakata (Fukuoka) stations. The 500-series bullet train is decked out inside and outside to look like the iconic Evangelion unit 01. So, if you’re planning a trip to Japan before then – “get in the damn Shinkansen”! *cough*

Sadly, not every single train running between Shin-Osaka and Hakata are 500 TYPE EVA ones. If you really want to ride that specific train, you’ll need to get the service leaving Hakata at 0636 or the one leaving Shin-Osaka at 1132. As tempting as it was to plan travelling purely around one train, I don’t think my mum or sister would have appreciated the idea as much.

Fortunately, some enterprising individual realised a gift shop in Hakata station would be a lucrative idea – so I did manage to get some photos and goodies. I restricted myself just to a key ring and pencil but there’s plenty more in there for hardcore Neon Genesis Evangelion fans.

Having landed in Hakata station, the Kyushu part of our holiday had began! Keep an eye out for more blogs on that…

You can read more about the Eva bullet train on the Japan Rail Pass website (yes, this trip is covered by the pass!) You should also definitely watch Neon Genesis Evangelion if you haven’t already.
