Interview with Kiki’s Delivery Service stage adaption’s artistic director

KikisDeliveryServiceWeb01Kiki’s Delivery Service, which most people reading this blog will know from the wonderful Studio Ghibli film, is coming to London! From 8 December – 8 January 2017, this wonderful story will be on stage at Southwark Playhouse, and I for one can’t wait to see it. If you haven’t already, you can buy your tickets here!

You might remember I ran a competition for tickets to Kiki’s Delivery Service a few months ago. Because I’m so excited about this play, I had to do an interview too! I caught up with Chris Smyrnios, the Artistic Director of Southwark Playhouse, to ask him some questions about the play.

What other theatre performances have you worked on? What are your favourites?

We have produced many shows over the years.  My favourites are A Doll’s House, Gaffer!, A Christmas Carol, Howl’s Moving Castle and Usagi Yojimbo.

Where did the idea for a Kiki’s Delivery Service play come from?

Well I am a big fan of both the 1983 novel and the 1989 film.  I happened to catch a glimpse of the film last Christmas and suddenly a bulb lit up over my head!

How did you go about adapting the story for the stage? What were the main challenges?

I secured the rights and brought the creative team together.  Although I have been involved in the process it is really the creative team that have had the challenge of bringing the show to life.

Can you give us any hints about what the audience will see on the night?

The play, like the film, follows the original novel closely and then towards the end goes off in its own direction.  Also, being a stage play with a completely different creative team it will have its own unique style.

Are there any other Hayao Miyazaki films you’d like to adapt for the stage?

I would love to adapt all of them!

What advice do you have for people who want to work in theatre?

It has to be something you really want to do and are passionate about.  Make good working relationships, work hard and eventually you will reap the rewards of an incredibly varied and creative career.

  1. Sophie,
I am so glad I stumbled upon your blog and this post especially. We are huge Ghibli fans and eventhough we live in London I didn’t know that the Kiki play was on. I have booked tickets already and can’t wait to see the play.
    Hope you will enjoy it,
