MCM Comic Con is returning to London at the end of this month and there’s plenty going on to entertain geeks of all persuasions. Naturally, I’m interested in anything Japan, so here’s my round-up of what MCM has to offer!
Tickets are selling out fast but there’s still time to get yours here. Whether you want to go for one day or throw yourself in for the full weekend, there’s different options to match your budget.
Fantastic guests!
Anime fans will be spoiled for choice with this con’s guest line-up:
- Tatsuma Minamikawa, director of the new Fairy Tale: Dragon Cry movie
- Yohei Ito: associate producer of Attack on Titan and A Silent Voice movie
- Veronica Taylor: the voice behind Pokemon’s Ash Ketchum
- Hynden Walch: the voice behind Gurren Lagann‘s Nia Teppelin (and Adventure Time‘s Princess Bubblegum)
Time for cosplay
Cosplayers have a number of opportunities to show off their skills (and the chance to win an overseas trip)!
- The UK qualifier for the World Cosplay Summit, the most famous international cosplay contest with its final held in Japan, takes place on Saturday
- A new contest – The International Cosplay League also has its UK qualifiers at MCM – team entries on Saturday and solo entries on Sunday. The final is held at ‘Japan Weekend’ in Madrid
- And, of course, there’s also the good old-fashioned cosplay masquerade, which is open to all entrants
Premiere of ‘Behind the Makeup’ cosplay documentary
On the Saturday, documentary filmmaker Lea Winchcombe will be screening the premiere of Behind the Makeup, a new short film that puts the light on the cosplay community. The documentary features stories of cosplayers around the world and how the hobby has transformed their lives.
MCM Comic Con Carnaval
The MCM Comic Con Carnaval is making its debut this month! In partnership with cosplay carnival band, Legion Mas, the Saturday night event features live performances, musical acts and a bevy of international street cuisine for all the revellers that work up an appetite.
If Japan isn’t so much your thing, there’s plenty else going on over the weekend, including:
- High profile film and TV guests (Donnie Yen from Rogue One, Billie Piper from Doctor Who and many more)
- Author talks
- Steampunk
